Who Made The Not-Quite-Baseball-Hall-Of-Fame In 2013?

So we know who made up the class of 2013 at the Baseball Hall of Fame: no one. Well, OK, the veterans committee voted in Hank O'Day, Col. Jacob Ruppert, and Deacon White. But they all died in the 1930s; we wouldn't expect much in the way of induction speeches. But the Baseball Reliquary's Shrine of the Eternals, the next best thing, did induct a handful of new members. On this week's excerpt from Slate's Hang Up and Listen podcast, Stefan Fatsis runs down the incoming class (Manny Mota, a member, is pictured above) and its qualifications. Patrice Evra Ejected From Game Before It Even Starts After Kicking Fan In The Head

Former Manchester United defender and current Marseille player Patrice Evra will not play in his team’s Europa League match today after he channeled his inner Eric Cantona and karate kicked a fan of his own team in the face. Here’s a photo of the incident: According to reports from those on the scene in Portugal, Marseille fans had been heckling Evra during pregame warmups for a good half hour. At one point a group of hecklers came down from the stands and near the pitch-side ad boards, where they were confronted by an angry Evra. After an exchange of words, Evra kicked one of the fans. There’s also video of the fight, though it’s a little hard to make out: Evra wasn’t named in the starting lineup but was to be on the substitutes bench. The Marseille-Vitória Guimarães mat…

Kirby Smart and Georgia will Face Massive Challenges in 2020

data-mm-id=”_rdlqi1t88″>Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs got a serious reality check on Wednesday, as junior quarterback Jake Fromm declared for the 2020 NFL Draft. With Fromm and a number of other key players departing, Georgia could face a difficult road in 2020.After Justin Fields bolted to Ohio State last offseason, Georgia was left without any real depth behind Fromm. As of now, Stetson Bennett is the incumbent, but he's former walk-on who backed up Fromm by default. Freshman D'Wan Mathis was a top 150 recruit in 2019, but he is recovering from surgery to remove a cyst on his brain. Carson Beck is a four-star recruit signed to the 2020 class, but starting a true freshman in the SEC is usually a recipe for disaster. There is no clear succession path after Fromm's…

Lauri Markkanen Wants Out of Chicago if the Bulls Don't Make Major Changes

data-mm-id=”_589mf3cgj”>Lauri Markkanen reportedly wants to see the Chicago Bulls make a whole lot of changes, or he wants to play elsewhere. The 22-year-old power forward has spent the first three years of his career with the Bulls but is clearly fed up with the direction of the franchise. Many of his teammates seem to agree with him.Joe Cowley had the following report for the Chicago Sun-Times:”And then there was the quiet storm, privately churning in the corner since early on in the season, keeping his frustrations as off-the-record one-liners, discrediting the direction of the offense, his role in it, and the highly embraced shot profile that Bulls analytics was stressing.

Make no mistake about it, third-year big man Lauri Markkanen was one unhappy camper before the coronavirus pu…

Marv Albert Signs Off After 55-Year Broadcasting Career

data-mm-id=”_y8k47h8yd”>Marv Albert's legendary 55-year broadcasting career came to a close last night as the Milwaukee Bucks salted the Atlanta Hawks away to secure a spot in the NBA Finals. As the final seconds drew closer and the final outcome clear, Albert reflected on the moment and all the moments that came before:“You gifted the game of basketball with your voice.” ✊Hall of Fame broadcaster Marv Albert wraps up a legendary career. pic.twitter.com/4ONADiRqOo— NBA on TNT (@NBAonTNT) July 4, 2021"With tonight's game winding down, I'm thinking 'Well, this is it. My last broadcast.' And all that's going through my mind is I have been so fortunate to be doing this for 55 years. Doing what I love, having a front-row seat for so many of the ico…

Jim Nantz Defends Tony Romo: 'He's the Absolute Best'

data-mm-id=”_q1x0tsud7″>Tony Romo was a revelation and received almost universal praise during his first two seasons alongside Jim Nantz in CBS' No. 1 NFL booth. Reviews have been more mixed as the years have passed. For my money he's well above average and his authentic enthusiasm is far better than the trend of people in these high-profile positions acting like they are too cool for it all. Detractors most often point out his penchant for making unusual sounds and and ill-timed factual errors in the biggest moments, which can come too fast and too furious for some viewers. Nantz has noticed those critiques and responded to them on SI Media With Jimmy Traina, saying it had an impact and is largely unfair.“I think there was a little bit of a misinformation attempt there to …
